intimacy coordination

As an Intimacy Coordinator (IC), the first part of my job is to facilitate communication between director, actors, and other departments to properly prep and safely craft scenes involving nudity or simulated sex.

As early as possible in pre-production, I meet individually with all parties involved to get granular about the vision and parameters of the scenes in question, with the goal of getting full clarity around how we’re shooting these.

My two decades of experience as a language interpreter initiated me in the art of deep listening, and trained me to adapt to a spectrum of communication styles. But as an IC, my job also encompasses mitigating the inherent power dynamic in the director–actor relationship. I ensure that actors are able to exercise full agency and actively consent to every aspect of the creation of the intimacy scenes they’re in.

A less-talked part of this work is perhaps the most creative: supporting the director in bringing their vision to life. As a director myself — and having felt quite awkward shooting sex scenes without an IC in my younger years — I’m invested in the creation of authentic-feeling scenes that convey whatever feel and tone the director is after.

I want the director to lean on me for as much (or as little) guidance as they desire. I’m there to problem solve, to offer choreography ideas, or simply to ensure we’re getting footage that can be used.
